What is a structural damage injury

Jose Bautista is back in the lineup for the Toronto Blue Jays because there was no structural damage in his wrist. He said:

It’s all about pain tolerance since there’s no structural damage. As long as you can tolerate the pain, I’m not going to make it any worse unless I do too much, too soon. I’ll let pain dictate what I can do, and hopefully two weeks is enough. I’m thinking it will be.

This got me thinking … I am unsure what structural damage is in an injury.

What is structural damage in a sports injury

The first thing I learned is that structural damage refers to the joints of the body. Most likely:

  1. Knees
  2. Elbows
  3. Ankles

How to treat heel pain with surgery

Heel pain, ugh.

I have suffered from this twice in two years while playing tennis and it isn’t fun. Well, any injury isn’t fun, but the problem with heel pain is that it affects almost everything you do.

There are four top reasons for heel pain:

  1. Heel bruise – Any tendon, ligament or muscle damage in the heel area.
  2. Plantar fasciitis – Overuse injury with chronic inflammation.
  3. Achilles tendon tear – Tendon torn and needs to be fixed.
  4. Heel spur – Calcification of the bony part of the foot.

My injuries have been a heel bruise and plantar fasciitis and recovery was slow, but manageable through rest, massage and stretching. Some people aren’t that lucky, though.

Deciding to play with a hurt shoulder – Sam Thaiday

Sam Thaiday is a professional rugby player who is known for his protection and scrapiness when on the field. His career has featured great high points including being named an Indigenous All Star of the century.

When I look for articles to talk about I try to balance the boring stuff with things that get my attention. It was with this in mind I found the article on Sam. Specifically, the article was basically letting Sam decide the state of his shoulder injury and whether he could play or not.

This is what got my interest … a quote by Darren Lockyer:

How to prevent common golf injuries

Golf is a wonderful recreational game that people from many athletic backgrounds can participate in. You don’t have to be a world class athlete, let alone an athlete in general to play golf.

Still, it is a very physically demanding sport if you don’t understand the basics.

The following are the most common golf injuries prevention tips:

Inflexibility – Golf relies on your ability to move, so if you are inflexible you could harm yourself through muscle strains.

Not conditioned – Golf doesn’t require you to be in top top shape, but you should be conditioned enough to be able to walk hills.

Why is drostanolone used in sports – Katsuya Kitamura

Katsuya Kitamura, a Japanese wrestler, was banned for two years for violating the performance enhancing drugs ban. He was tested after a match and drostanolone was found in his system.

Used mostly by women fighting breast cancer, drostanolone was found to increase athletic muscle development and performance.

One website calls it:

Masteron has a deceivingly low anabolic/androgenic ratio, but since DHT is 5x as androgenic as testosterone and has a 3-4x higher affinity to receptor sites, Masteron provides a lot of “bang for the Buck” when examined on a Mg for Mg basis.

Concussions – Due to the nature of the contact sport itself, concussions are always a concern due to lack of protections.

How to treat a sprained thigh – Sergio Perez

You don’t usually equate sprained thighs with auto racing, but that is what happened to Sergio Perez. Before we get too far along on this, check out the video at the end of the post. Sergio is an F1 racing driver and he lost control during the qualifier for the Monaco Grand Prix.

He’s very lucky to walk away with a concussion and a sprained thigh. Sergio appears to being taken it in stride as he posted to his Twitter account:

Thanks for your support!! In this moment thanks God all ok .. Can’t race tomorrow 🙁 but c u back in Montreal 🙂

Most common rowing injuries and prevention

most-common-rowing-injuries-and-prevention-photoRowing is an intensive sport that relies on a number of physical attributes such as:

  • Arm and chest strength
  • Cardiovascular recovery
  • Leg endurance

Thanks to the folks at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, we have a list of the most common rowing injuries and how to prevent them.

Rib fractures – Fracture of or broken ribs is a condition commonly seen in rowing due to the compression that occurs due to the high frequency. You can prevent the rib fractures by focusing on back and abdominal strengthening exercises.

Wrist inflammation – The wrist is a wonderfully complex joint. Wrist inflammation can be caused by many things, but in rowing it is primarily caused by the motion of oar movement. The society believes this injury occurs more frequently in cold weather, so they suggest ensuring warmth is supplied to the area during exertion.

How to prevent kid’s lacrosse injuries

how-to-prevent-kids-lacrosse-injuries-photoLacrosse is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the United States. Based upon a Native American sporting ceremony, lacrosse combines many attributes of modern sports that it predates.

With the explosion in popularity also comes an increase in injuries. Youth lacrosse news is full of stories of players handling themselves improperly and suffering the consequences.

Here are common ways to prevent kid’s lacrosse injuries:

Proper equipment: Ensure the proper equipment is being used and is properly fitted. Pads exist to disperse the force of a hit and not to look cool. Mouth guards exist to protect your teeth and oral cavity and not to juggle with during play. Coaches and parents need to ensure that each player is outfitted properly and understands the importance of the equipment.
